This Stableford calculator turns your playing handicap, stroke indexes and hole scores into a points total for 9 or 18 holes. You get 2 points for a net par, 1 for a net bogey and nothing for anything worse. Over 18 holes, 36 points means you played to your handicap.
How to use this Stableford calculator
Enter your playing handicap, which our golf handicap calculator can work out for you. Then choose all 18 holes, the front nine or the back nine, using a 9-hole playing handicap for those two. A plus goes in as a negative number. Next, copy the par and stroke index from your card, then enter your gross score on each hole with any penalties included.
How to calculate Stableford points by hand
Stableford scoring compares your net score with a fixed target, which is par unless the committee sets something else, under Rule 21.1 of the Rules of Golf. Your handicap strokes come off first, so the Stableford points for any hole come from one simple sum.
Points = par + handicap strokes + 2 - gross score, never below 0.
| Net score | Points |
|---|---|
| Net double bogey or worse | 0 |
| Net bogey | 1 |
| Net par | 2 |
| Net birdie | 3 |
| Net eagle | 4 |
| Net albatross | 5 |
You receive handicap strokes in stroke index order. Off 24, you receive one everywhere, then a second on index 1 to 6. Off +2, you give one back on index 18 and 17. If you only play nine, you receive them on those nine in the same order, as in England Golf's own 9-hole cases.
On the example off 18, a 6 on the par 4 2nd earns 4 + 1 + 2 - 6 = 1 point. A 3 on the 11th earns 3 points. The whole round comes to 33.
What your Stableford score means
A level par round off scratch earns 2 points 18 times, which is where 36 points comes from. England Golf's handicapping guidance says that target holds from any tee with no additional strokes, because your shots already allow for the tees you're on.
Your index averages your lowest 8 differentials from your latest 20, so falling short is normal. Then comes the allowance. England keeps a mandatory 95% for individual Stableford and 85% for four-ball. Scotland, Wales and Ireland now let clubs vary them: 85% to 100% in singles and 75% to 90% in four-ball, so check your competition's terms. At 95%, 20 shots become 19 and 36 become 34, so a round that's bang on your handicap can still finish a point or two short.
Our guide to what counts as a good golf handicap shows how yours compares. Nobody sets a winning figure for Stableford points, though Golf Monthly's staff gave views running from 38 to 43 in December 2025.
When can you pick up?
Once a hole can only earn zero, the Rules encourage you to stop. These gross scores earn nothing:
| No shots | 1 shot | 2 shots | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Par 3 | 5 | 6 | 7 |
| Par 4 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
| Par 5 | 7 | 8 | 9 |
Here's the catch: your points use your playing handicap, but your record uses your full course handicap. England Golf's case is Nigel, whose course handicap is 34 and playing handicap 32. On a par 5 at index 16, he reaches the green in 7 and picks up, so his record shows 9 when holing the putt would have shown 8. That comes from a maximum score event, but the sum matches Stableford, where an 8 there earns zero. So if a putt could save a shot on your record, take it.
Turn points into a handicap score
The R&A defines net double bogey as the lowest score that earns zero points. So par + course handicap + 36 - points gives your adjusted gross score, provided you scored them off that same figure. Off more than 54, it can run high, because a hole where you receive 4 or more shots is capped at par + 5.
Two limits to keep in mind:
- This Stableford points calculator scores one card at a time, so enter each player separately in a team format.
- Your committee's result is the one that counts.
For a running score out there, use a golf app, while a golf shot tracker shows which clubs cost you points. Our free golf tools cover the rest.
Your questions answered
What is a good Stableford score?
Anything above 36 beats your handicap.
What happens if I pick up?
You get zero for that hole. There's no other penalty, so you just carry on.
Which handicap do I use?
Your playing handicap. In England, that's 95% of your full figure for singles. It can differ in Scotland, Wales and Ireland, so check the terms of the day.
Do penalties count?
Yes. Rule 21.1 counts them along with every shot you make.
